Understanding Housing Insecurity in Idaho
As REALTORS®, we see the wide spectrum of housing needs in our communities. While we primarily work with those purchasing or selling real estate, we are often consulted on circumstances where families or individuals are experiencing hardship related to housing. While not our primary role in the industry, these issues and concerns impact our industry in big ways.
Housing insecurity can be defined as anyone who has the short or long term potential of not having safe and stable housing. This may materialize as someone’s inability to pay rent/mortgage, lack of resources to pay for basic utilities, unexpected eviction due to landlord/property owner’s change of priorities or raising rent, and even homelessness. Those who are paying 30% or more on housing costs (rent, mortgage, etc.) are especially vulnerable to these risks.
According to United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, in 2020 there are 243 homeless households in Idaho. This amounts to over 2,300 individuals. In addition, over 6000 children and their families live with others and don’t have a home to call their own. While these numbers are concerning, they have increased considerably since the COVID-19 pandemic. This is largely due to increased housing costs, inflation, service industry changes, and more. Many individuals who were already at risk ran into greater challenges over the past 2 1/2 years. Some have been unable to rebound from the setbacks they have faced.
This prompts us in the housing industry to pause and ask how we can help; and what our role in addressing these needs is. It is our philosophy that we are only as strong as our most vulnerable community members and we have a responsibility to gather and share resources for those in need. In response to these concerns, we have compiled a Housing Insecurity Resource Guide for those facing housing insecurity challenges. We hope that this guide of public resources will serve as a helpful tool as you encounter those in need. While Silvercreek® Realty Group does not endorse any one organization, we commend the work of all to create sustainable housing for our communities.
We also call to action any who work in the industry to give back and support the WHOLE housing industry. This can be done by:
- Giving Time: volunteer at your local shelter or at any of the organizations listed in the Housing Insecurity Resource Guide
- Donating Money: with so many non-profits addressing housing concerns, a financial donation would be welcome by any. Check out the Boise Rescue Mission, CATCH, LEAP Housing, and the Salvation Army (to name a few)
- Sharing Resources & Knowledge: one important ways to give is by sharing the knowledge and resources you receive. The more the community knows of these risks and needs, the greater we can come together to serve and support our communities
